Shingles are real pine shake; intricate details are resin. I purchased this birdhouse in May 2011 and put it on a large painted post in the backyard in mid-June. It appeared to be well constructed and the back portion of the wall pulls out/off to facilitate cleaning of old nest material. Six months later, the front exterior of the birdhouse still looks good, however, the back panel is totally falling apart due to moisture in the wood and is a moldy black mess. Upon further inspection, the black mold is now completely filling the inside walls of the birdhouse. This can't be good for little baby birds. It's falling apart more and more every day. Very disappointed with this product.
